Autism and Section 504

Although Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 has been in effect for more than 20 years, it has had little direct impact on educational practice until fairly recently. Moreover, the primary thrust has been directed toward children with mild disabilities. In this article, we focus on Section 504 as it pertains to children with autism. We describe eligibility requirements for Section 504, and rights and protections afforded. We also discuss trends in litigation for students with autism. Finally, we discuss potential issues pertaining to children with autism served under Section 504.
